The Name: ᎫᏬᎯ or Kuwohi, translates into English as “Mulberry place”. Kuwohi is the geographical high point near the center of the ancestral Cherokee land, which has cultural and spiritual significance to the Cherokee. Mulberry is the type of fruit that is grown on the mountain. For thousands of years, it was a site of significant importance to the Cherokee. The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians' Tribal Council, without opposition, voted on Jan. 4 passing a resolution to submit an application to the U.S. Board of Geographic Names. Their goal is to restore the name "Kuwohi" to a mountain in the Great Smoky Mountains.
